Introduction about evaporator
A defining feature of rotary evaporation is the application of reduced pressure, or a vacuum. This is not merely an accessory but a core functional principle. By lowering the atmospheric pressure inside the system, the kinetic energy required for solvent molecules to escape the liquid phase is reduced. Consequently, the solvent's boiling point drops substantially. For instance, a solvent that normally boils at 100°C at atmospheric pressure may boil at 30-40°C under a sufficient vacuum. This dramatic reduction allows for the application of mild heat to drive evaporation, effectively protecting the target solute from the damaging effects of high temperatures. The vacuum system is thus key to the rotovap’s gentle and efficient character.
