Common issues with rotary evaporators include loss of vacuum, poor condensation, and bumping. A loss of vacuum is often due to leaks at seals, joints, or cracks in glassware; systematically checking and tightening connections or replacing seals usually resolves this. Poor condensation, leading to solvent loss into the vacuum pump, can result from insufficient coolant flow, warm coolant, or a clogged condenser; checking the chiller and coolant lines is the first step. Bumping, though less common with rotation, can occur if the rotation speed is too slow, the vacuum is applied too quickly, or the sample is too thick; adjusting these parameters typically solves the problem.
