Introduction about incubator

In advanced incubators, controlling one parameter in isolation is often insufficient; the interdependency of temperature, humidity, and gas concentration presents an engineering control challenge.

Temperature and Humidity: Heating the chamber lowers relative humidity (RH). To maintain 95% RH at 37°C, a significant amount of water vapor must be actively added, which itself requires energy and precise control to avoid condensation. Condensation is an enemy, as it can drip onto cultures and become a vector for contamination. Temperature and CO2: Warming incoming CO2 gas from a cylinder (which is cold) requires energy.

More subtly, when the door opens, cold, dry lab air rushes in. The system must simultaneously reheat the chamber, re-humidify the air, and reinject CO2, but not in a way that causes overshooting. Adding O2 control (for hypoxia studies) adds another layer of complexity, as nitrogen is used to displace O2, affecting the partial pressures of other gases. Modern incubators use sophisticated, cascading PID loops and mass flow controllers to manage these interactions. The control software must be intelligent enough to prioritize and sequence recovery actions to achieve a fast, stable, and uniform return to setpoints without creating oscillations or adverse interactions between the parameters it is designed to govern.
