Introduction about incubator

The required features of an incubator are dictated by the biosafety level (BSL) of the microorganisms being handled. BSL-1 (low risk): Standard incubators are sufficient for non-pathogenic strains of *E. coli* or yeast. Basic cleanliness is advised. BSL-2 (moderate risk, e.g., *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Salmonella*): Incubators used for known human pathogens should have enhanced containment features. Ideally, they should be placed in a biosafety cabinet when cultures are being handled.

The incubator itself should be easy to decontaminate (smooth interior, sealed seams). Some labs use sealed containers or secondary containment for plates inside the incubator. HEPA filtration on exhaust (not just intake) might be considered to prevent aerosol release when the door is opened. BSL-3 (high risk, e.g., *M. tuberculosis*, *Francisella tularensis*): Work is done in sealed biosafety cabinets, and cultures are often incubated *inside* the cabinet or in a dedicated, double-door pass-through incubator that is directly accessible from the cabinet, ensuring no open transfer into the lab atmosphere.

These units often have rigorous sealing and decontamination cycles. For BSL-2 and above, alarm systems to alert staff of temperature deviations are crucial to prevent unnoticed culture loss or compromised containment. Matching the incubator's design and placement to the biosafety level is a fundamental component of laboratory risk management.
