The autoclave is a precision sterilization device that relies on the physical properties of pressurized steam. By containing steam within a sealed chamber under pressure (15-30 psi), it achieves temperatures in the range of 121-134°C. This high-temperature moist heat is rapidly lethal to all microorganisms, including viruses, fungi, and bacterial spores, through protein denaturation.
The operational cycle is designed for maximum efficacy. It begins with the critical step of air removal. It then holds the load at the sterilizing temperature for a validated time period. Finally, it exhausts the steam and dries the contents. This technology is foundational in healthcare for reprocessing invasive devices, in dentistry for infection control, and in laboratories for ensuring experimental integrity and managing biohazards. It also serves in industrial manufacturing.
The autoclave is the benchmark because it provides a non-toxic, residue-free sterilization process. The condensing action of steam releases latent heat directly onto surfaces, ensuring uniform and efficient heating. This allows it to effectively sterilize complex instruments with lumens, porous materials like gauze, and prepackaged kits, which are challenging for many alternative sterilization technologies.
