Sodium acetate is an organic substance with the molecular formula CH3COONa and a molecular weight of 82.03. Sodium acetate trihydrate appears as white crystals with a relative density of 1.45 and a melting point of 58°C. It weathers in dry air and loses its water of crystallization at 120°C, after which it decomposes. Anhydrous sodium acetate is a transparent, colorless crystal with a melting point of 324°C. It is easily soluble in water and can be used as a buffer, mordant, in the determination of lead, copper, nickel, and iron, in organic synthesis, and in film washing and printing.
