Introduction:
Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) has excellent electro-optic, nonlinear and piezoelectric properties of its inherent materials. Applications using large electro-optic coefficients of lithium niobate include optical modulation and Q switching at infrared wavelengths. Applications of large nonlinear coefficients using LiNbO3 include optical parametric oscillations, different-frequency mixing to generate tunable infrared wavelengths, and second harmonic generation. Applications using piezoelectric properties include ultrasonic transducers and acoustic surface wave devices.
