The significance of the lanthanum-tungsten electrode as an alternative to the tungsten-thorium electrode is first and foremost in the avoidance of radioactive hazards. The electrical conductivity of lanthanum tungsten 15 (1.5% lanthanum oxide) is closer to that of the 2% thoriated tungsten electrode, so that the electric welder can easily and quickly replace the thoriated tungsten electrode with this electrode without any change in the welding procedure and be protected from the radioactive hazards of thoriated tungsten electrodes. This changeover is easy and comfortable both under AC and DC conditions. Another advantage of the lanthanum tungsten electrode is its durability, high current and low burn-out rate.
