ASTM A106 Gr.B HFW Solid Finned Tube with CS Fins For Fired Furnace Application
ASTM A106 Gr.B HFW Solid Finned Tube with CS Fins For Fired Furnace Application
ASTM A106 Gr.B HFW Solid Finned Tube with Carbon Steel Fins is a specialized, high-performance component designed for efficient heat transfer in industrial applications. It consists of a seamless carbon steel base tube with solid carbon steel fins attached through a high-frequency welding (HFW) process.
Breaking downs of the Components
1. Base Tube: ASTM A106 GR.B seamless pipe
(1) Chemical Composition of ASTM A106 Gr.B
The table below shows the required chemical composition for Grade B. The values are maximum percentages unless a range is specified.
| Element | Composition (%) |
| Carbon (C) | 0.30 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.29 - 1.06 |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.035 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 min |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.40 max |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.40 max |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.15 max |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.40 max |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.08 max |
(2) Mechanical Properties of ASTM A106 Gr.B
The material must meet these minimum mechanical requirements in a longitudinal direction.
| Property | Requirement (min) |
| Tensile Strength | 415 MPa (60,000 psi) |
| Yield Strength | 240 MPa (35,000 psi) |
| Elongation | 30% (in 50mm gauge length) |
2. Fin Type: HFW High Frequency Welded Solid Fin
- A high-frequency electrical current heats the contact point between the fin and tube to forging temperature, and pressure is applied to fuse them together.
- This creates a strong, permanent metallurgical bond, which ensures excellent heat transfer and durability under thermal cyclin.
- Solid fins are robust and resist mechanical damage and abrasion from particulate-laden gases like flue gas. Carbon steel is cost-effective for high-temperature use, and its thermal expansion matches the base tube perfectly.
3. Fin’s material: Carbon Steel
- The fin’s material is also carbon steel material, just like the bare tubes.
- Using the same material class ensures that the tube and fins have identical thermal expansion coefficients. This means they expand and contract at the same rate when heated and cooled, preventing stress and failure at the welded bond.
4. The primary application of ASTM A106 Gr.B HFW Solid Finned Tube with C.S. Fins:
The table below summarizes these key application areas and the function of the finned tube within them:
| Industry | Specific Application | Function of the Finned Tube |
| Power Generation | Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), Boiler Economizers, Air Heaters | To recover heat from flue/exhaust gas to generate steam or preheat boiler feedwater/air. |
| Petrochemical & Refining | Process Gas Heaters, Furnace Convection Sections | To heat hydrocarbon streams and process fluids to required temperatures. |
| Waste Heat Recovery | Recovery Units in cement, metallurgical, or chemical plants | To capture waste heat from exhaust gases for steam generation or preheating. |
| Heavy Industry | Industrial Boilers, Heat Exchangers, Air Coolers | To enhance heat transfer in various thermal management systems. |
