Aseptic packaging ensures that food remains sterile and free from bacteria or other harmful microorganisms. Aseptic packaging is the final component needed in aseptic food processing, where food products are continuously sterilized in order to ensure that no microorganisms (which cause food poisoning or food decay) are present. Aseptic packaging and processing can be accomplished in a variety of ways.
The food itself then must immediately be run through the equipment while it is sterile. The packaging itself can be sterilized by steam, heat, radiation, or hydrogen peroxide.
