Product Description of Natural Cosmetic Ingredients Sialic acid
Sialic acid (SA), scientific name N-acetylneuraminic acid, is a natural carbohydrate compound widely present in biological systems. It was originally isolated by Blix from the mucin of the bovine mandibular salivary gland, hence it was named sialic acid.
Sialic acid is a general term for N - or O-substituted derivatives of neuraminic acid, a monosaccharide with nine carbon skeletons. It is also the most common member in this group, the name of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac or NANA). Salivary acid is widely distributed in animal tissues and less in other species, from plants and fungi to yeast and bacteria, mainly distributed in glycoproteins and gangliosides. Amino groups typically carry acetyl or glycol groups, but other modifications have been described. Hydroxyl substituents may undergo significant changes; Acetyl, lacto, methyl, sulfate, and phosphate groups have been discovered.
