Known colloquially as the swing gearbox, the swing reducer of an excavator is a critical transmission component that connects the slewing motor with the large slewing gear ring. It mainly functions to slow down rotational speed and boost torque, facilitating smooth 360° rotation of the upper body assembly.
Main Components
Sun Gear: Attached to the slewing motor’s splines, it inputs high‑speed power.Planet Gears: 3‑4 gears per stage, rotating both around and on the sun gear for torque transmission.Ring Gear: Fixed inside the housing and meshes with planet gears.Planet Carrier: Provides power output to drive the bottom pinion gear.Brake: Built‑in wet‑type multi‑plate brake; engaged by springs and released hydraulically to prevent reverse rotation.Housing and Bearings: Heavy‑duty cast or forged steel housing supported by high‑load bearings, dust‑proof and leak‑resistant.
Low‑torque high‑speed power from the hydraulic motor is delivered through the sun gear, first and second planetary gear sets to the output planet carrier. The low‑speed high‑torque pinion meshes with the slewing bearing’s inner gear ring, making the upper structure slew.
Common Failures & Root Reasons
Abnormal sound / Stuttering operation: Gear abrasion and pitting corrosion, bearing breakdown, lack of lubricant or dirty oil, unsuitable meshing clearance.
Oil oozing and leaking: Damaged oil seals, housing fractures, overfilled lubricant, blocked breather hole.
Lazy or weak slewing: Worn gears/bearings, partial brake release, hydraulic motor internal bypass flow, incompatible gear ratio.
Excessive heat buildup: Low oil quantity or degraded lubrication oil, overloading, continuous brake friction, inefficient heat dissipation.
Gear jumping / Broken gear teeth: Shock loads, foreign matter entry, fatigue aging, misaligned shafts during installation.
