Function
The swing motor acts as the core executing component of an excavator slewing system. Supplied with high-pressure hydraulic oil from the main hydraulic pump, it converts hydraulic energy into rotational mechanical torque and transmits power to the swing reducer, enabling the excavator upper carriage to realize 360° reversible rotation relative to the undercarriage for material unloading and position adjustment operations.
Structure
Its internal assembly mainly consists of rotating groups including pistons, cylinder block, valve plate and slippers, integrated parking brake assembly, anti-recoil valve, overflow pressure relief valve and charge check valve modules. Paired with the planetary swing reducer, it converts high-speed low-torque output of the motor into low-speed high-torque driving force to bear heavy slewing loads. The built-in brake piston and friction disc assembly achieves automatic locking braking when hydraulic supply is cut off.
Working Principle
When the pilot control handle is actuated, pilot oil pushes the brake spool to release the parking brake. High-pressure oil enters two oil ports of the swing motor alternately to drive piston reciprocation inside the cylinder block; the valve plate distributes high/low pressure oil continuously to drive the cylinder block and output shaft to rotate. The anti-reaction valve balances residual back pressure at oil outlets to prevent upper structure reverse drifting caused by rotation inertia. The overflow valve limits peak system pressure to protect internal components, while the charge check valve supplements oil to avoid cavitation inside the motor.
Common Failures
Worn pistons, abraded valve plate mating surfaces or degraded slippers will trigger severe internal leakage, resulting in weak slewing torque, slow rotation speed and delayed response. Worn brake friction discs or stuck brake spools lead to incomplete brake release, increased slewing resistance, jittery rotation or failure of parking locking. Damaged anti-recoil valve causes obvious reverse drifting after stopping swing action. Excessive internal leakage generates heat buildup and abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise; bearing damage or metal particle contamination produces loud knocking and rattling noise during operation. External seal aging leads to oil seepage and hydraulic oil loss.
Maintenance
Periodically inspect external oil seals, pipe joints and housing for oil leakage. Regularly replace hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent particle abrasion of precision matching surfaces. Check brake clearance and friction disc thickness regularly, replace worn brake pads timely. Ensure unobstructed drain oil pipeline to avoid casing pressure buildup. Verify charge valve and overflow valve performance regularly, clean or replace stuck valve spools to guarantee stable slewing smoothness and braking reliability.
