As the primary power unit of excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump is engine-driven to transform mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It transmits pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors, enabling all operational movements of the excavator. The vast majority of engineering construction excavators are fitted with axial variable displacement piston pumps. Mid and large-sized excavators adopt an integrated structure combining dual main pumps and a rear pilot gear pump. Two separate high-pressure oil supply circuits supply oil to the main control valve, allowing compound working motions, with rated working pressure ranging from 28MPa to 35MPa. Mounted at the machine tail, the low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool actuation. Piston assemblies fixed on the cylinder block and pump casing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, finishing oil suction and pressurization processes. Changing the swash plate’s tilt angle adjusts piston stroke length, which modifies the pump’s displacement. An external servo regulator controls swash plate movement according to hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the swash plate angle improves fluid flow and operating speed, while decreasing it reduces fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate separates low-pressure inlet passages from high-pressure outlet passages to realize hydraulic oil distribution. Three core control functions are equipped on the pump to ensure reliable working performance. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under higher load conditions, protecting the engine and raising power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides flow matching actual working demands and maintains low idle displacement for fuel saving. The HP pressure limiting function lowers pump displacement at peak pressure levels, protecting hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Typical faults include internal leakage caused by piston wear, broken valve plates or clogged regulators, leading to slow operation speed and insufficient power output. A locked maximum-displacement regulator causes engine overload, black smoke exhaust and stalling during heavy-duty operation. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat energy, resulting in abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. System air entry, inadequate hydraulic oil volume and damaged bearings or pistons generate abnormal operating noise. Daily maintenance work requires regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent wear of precision internal components. Ensuring good tightness of oil suction pipes avoids air ingestion and machine vibration, and maintaining standard hydraulic oil levels keeps pump performance stable.
