Popularly referred to as the swing gearbox, the swing reducer on an excavator is an essential transmission part connecting the slewing motor and the large slewing gear ring. It primarily serves to decelerate rotation and increase torque, allowing the upper framework to rotate smoothly 360 degrees in all directions.
Critical Component Structure
Sun Gear: Coupled to the slewing motor’s spline section, accepting high‑speed power input.
Planet Gears: Three to four gears per stage, moving around and rotating on the sun gear to transmit torque power.
Ring Gear: Secured within the housing and engages with planet gear units.
Planet Carrier: Outputs driving power to operate the lower small drive gear.
Brake: Internal wet‑style multi‑plate brake, engaged by spring force and released by hydraulic pressure, stopping reverse slewing motion.Housing and Bearings: Heavy‑duty cast or forged steel housing supported by high‑load bearings, dust‑proof and oil‑leakage‑resistant.

High‑speed low‑torque power generated by the hydraulic motor is delivered through the sun gear, first‑stage planetary set and second‑stage planetary set to the output planet carrier. The low‑speed high‑torque pinion meshes with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing, driving the upper machine body to slew.
Frequent Fault Issues & Underlying Causes
- Unusual sound / Unstable movement: Gear abrasion and pitting corrosion, bearing damage failure, lack of lubricating oil or oil contamination, improper gear meshing backlash gap.
- Oil seepage and leakage malfunctions: Damaged oil seal rings, housing structural fractures, excessive lubricant filling height, blocked air‑vent breather opening.
- Sluggish or weak rotational slewing: Worn gears and bearing parts, incomplete brake release action, internal bypass flow leakage of hydraulic motor, non‑compatible gear transmission ratio.
