Product Description
CAT E324D E326D Travel Reduction Gearbox 227-6133 200-6216 Crawler Excavator Reducer
An excavator’s travel reducer, also referred to as the travel gearbox, is a vital transmission part linking the hydraulic motor to the track drive wheel. Its main role is to lower rotational speed and boost torque, delivering low‑speed, high‑torque power to the tracks.
Core Structure (Three‑Stage Planetary Gear Design)
• Sun Gear: Attached to the hydraulic motor input and acts as the power input unit.
• Planet Gears: 3–4 units that revolve around the sun gear while spinning individually to transfer power.
• Ring Gear (Internal Gear Ring): Either fixed or floating, meshing with the planet gears.
• Planet Carrier: Transmits output power to turn the reducer casing and track drive wheel.
• Casing & Bearings: Robust casing ensures dust and oil leakage resistance; heavy‑load bearings sustain rotary motion.
• Brake: Integrated multi‑disc parking brake, spring‑engaged and hydraulically released, to stop the machine from rolling on slopes.
Working Principle
High‑speed, low‑torque power from the hydraulic motor enters the travel reducer → three‑stage planetary gears perform gradual speed reduction → low‑speed, high‑torque power is output → propels the tracks for machine movement.
Typical Failures and Root Causes

Typical Failures and Root Causes
- Unusual or loud noise: Gear abrasion, bearing failure, inadequate lubrication or degraded oil condition.
- Oil leakage: Worn seals, casing fractures, overfilled oil level.
- Poor travel performance / Track drift: Worn gears or bearings, unreleased brake, inconsistent left‑right reducer performance.
- Excessive heat generation: Overloading, insufficient lubrication, poor heat dissipation, brake drag.
- Gear jumping or seizing: Broken gear teeth, damaged planet carrier, foreign particle contamination.
