The excavator slewing reducer (widely called slewing gearbox) is a critical transmission part that connects the slewing motor with the large slewing ring gear. It is mainly designed for speed reduction and torque multiplication, enabling the excavator upper structure to perform smooth 360° rotation.
Core Structure
- Sun gear: Connected to the slewing motor via splines to receive high-speed power input.
- Planet gear: 3 to 4 units per stage; rotates around the sun gear while spinning on its own axis to transmit torque.
- Ring gear: Fixed to the reducer housing and keeps meshed with planet gears.
- Planet carrier: Acts as the power output end and drives the lower drive pinion.
- Brake: Integrated wet multi-disc brake; spring-on braking and hydraulic pressure release to avoid unintended slewing drift.
- Housing & bearing: Adopts high-strength cast or forged steel housing, fitted with heavy-duty bearings, featuring reliable dustproof and oil-sealing performance.
Working Principle
High-speed low-torque power delivered by the hydraulic motor passes through the sun gear, first-stage planet gears and first-stage planet carrier, then transfers to the secondary sun gear, secondary planet gears and secondary planet carrier for final output. The drive pinion rotates at low speed with high torque, meshes with the inner ring gear of the slewing bearing, and drives the upper structure to rotate.
Common Faults & Causes
- Abnormal noise and jitter: Gear wear and pitting, bearing failure, lubrication shortage or oil contamination, improper meshing clearance.
- Oil leakage: Aged oil seals, housing cracks, overfilled lubricant, blocked breather valve.
- Sluggish and weak slewing: Worn gears or bearings, brake drag failure, motor internal leakage, improper speed ratio matching.
- Overheating: Low oil level or oil degradation, overload operation, persistent brake dragging, poor heat dissipation condition.
- Gear jumping and tooth breakage: Severe impact load, foreign substance intrusion, material fatigue wear, assembly misalignment.
