Excavator swing gearbox (slewing reducer) functions as a vital transmission connector between the slewing motor and large slewing gear ring. By lowering speed and amplifying torque, it enables stable 360° rotary movement of the excavator upper body.
Core Structure
• Sun gear: Matches with slewing motor splines to input high-speed rotational power.
• Planet gear: 3–4 per planetary stage; orbits the sun gear and rotates independently to deliver torque.
• Ring gear: Secured to housing and maintains meshing with planetary gears.
• Planet carrier: Outputs rotary power and actuates the bottom drive pinion.
• Brake: Internal wet multi-disc brake design; spring braking and hydraulic release to prevent unintended rotation.
• Housing & Bearings: Robust cast/forged steel housing, heavy-load bearings equipped, superior dustproof and leakproof property.
Working Principle
The hydraulic motor provides high-speed low-torque power, which is transmitted stage by stage through the planetary gear train. After two-stage deceleration and torque rise, the output pinion runs at low speed and high torque, meshes with the slewing bearing inner ring gear, and drives the upper structure to swing freely.
Common Faults & Causes
• Strange noise and operation stuttering: Gear abrasion and pitting, bearing malfunction, oil shortage or impurity, incorrect gear meshing gap.
• Gear oil leakage: Seal rubber aging, housing structural crack, overfilled oil level, breather blockage.
• Slewing lag and insufficient power: Worn transmission gears or bearings, brake releasing failure, motor internal leakage, mismatched gear ratio.
• Thermal overheating: Lubricant deficiency or degradation, long-time overload work, persistent brake friction, inefficient heat dissipation.
