An excavator’s swing reducer, also referred to as the swing gearbox, serves as a vital transmission element linking the slewing motor to the large slewing gear ring. Its primary purpose is speed reduction and torque amplification, enabling seamless 360‑degree rotation of the upper machine body.
Core Construction
Sun Gear: Coupled with the splines of the slewing motor, it receives high‑speed power input.
Planet Gears: Each stage contains 3 to 4 pieces, orbiting and spinning around the sun gear to transfer torque.
Ring Gear: Secured to the housing and meshes with the planet gears.
Planet Carrier: Delivers power output and drives the lower pinion gear (driving gear).
Brake: Integrated wet multi‑disc brake with spring‑on and hydraulic‑off design to stop reverse rotation.
Housing & Bearings: High‑strength cast or forged steel housing, fitted with heavy‑load bearings, featuring dustproof and leakproof performance.

High‑speed, low‑torque power generated by the hydraulic motor passes through the sun gear, primary‑stage planetary assembly and secondary‑stage planetary assembly to the output planet carrier. The pinion gear spins at low speed with high torque, meshing with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing to realize slewing movement of the upper structure.
Typical Malfunctions & Underlying Causes
- Unusual noise / Jerky movement: Gear wear and surface pitting, bearing damage, insufficient or polluted lubricant, inappropriate gear meshing backlash.
- Oil seepage and leakage: Worn oil seals, housing cracks, excessive lubricant filling, blocked air vent.
- Slow or under‑powered slewing motion: Worn gears or bearings, incomplete brake disengagement, internal leakage of the hydraulic motor, mismatched transmission ratio.
- Severe overheating: Insufficient oil level or deteriorated lubricant, overloaded operation, brake dragging, poor heat dissipation.
- Gear jumping / Tooth fracture: Impact loads, foreign particle intrusion, fatigue degradation, shaft misalignment during assembly.
