Commonly dubbed the swing gearbox, the swing reducer fitted on excavators is a critical transmission component connecting the slewing drive motor to the large slewing gear ring. Its primary role is speed reduction and torque enhancement, allowing the upper superstructure to perform smooth 360° rotational slewing.

Primary Structural Parts Layout

Sun Gear: Coupled with the spline section of the slewing motor, accepting high‑speed power input energy.
Planet Gears: Three to four gears for every single stage, moving circumferentially around the sun gear while self‑rotating to transmit torque power.
Ring Gear: Fastened permanently to the housing and engages with planet gear units.
Planet Carrier: Provides power output to drive the lower small driving gear wheel.
Brake: Built‑in wet multi‑disc braking unit, activated by spring force for engagement and hydraulic pressure for release, preventing backward slewing movement.
Housing and Bearings: Heavy‑duty cast or forged steel housing supported by high‑load‑capacity bearings, dust‑resistant and oil‑leakage‑proof.
High‑speed low‑torque power generated by the hydraulic motor is delivered through the sun gear, first‑stage planetary gear group and second‑stage planetary gear group to the output planet carrier. The low‑speed high‑torque pinion meshes with the inner gear ring of the slewing bearing, driving the upper equipment body to slew smoothly.

Frequent Fault Phenomena & Underlying Root Causes

  • Unusual sound output / Unstable running movement: Gear abrasion and surface pitting defects, bearing damage functional failure, lack of lubricating oil or oil contamination pollution, improper gear meshing backlash gap size.
  • Oil seepage and leakage functional malfunctions: Damaged oil seal ring components, housing structural fracture damages, excessive lubricant filling level height, blocked air‑vent breather opening outlet.
  • Slow‑moving or weak rotational slewing performance: Worn gears and bearing component parts, incomplete brake release operational action, internal bypass flow leakage of hydraulic motor body, non‑compatible gear transmission reduction ratio.
