The excavator joystick is in essence a proportional hydraulic pilot control valve. It does not directly power excavator motions but transmits control‑purpose hydraulic oil to activate the main multi‑way valve, controlling the speed and direction of machine movements. Positioned on the left and right within the operator cabin, the control lever (also referred to as pilot control lever, hydraulic lever or joystick) serves as the core operating element for all excavator functions, functioning as the machine’s “steering wheel and limbs”.
Operation Method
All excavator operations are controlled via multidirectional tilting of the joystick:
- Boom (main arm) lifting
- Stick (secondary arm) extension and retraction
- Bucket opening and closing
- Left‑right upper‑structure slewing
- Combined control with foot pedal valves for traveling
Operating Principle
Each handle houses an integrated hydraulic pilot valve:
- Pushing the handle displaces the internal spool
- Low‑pressure hydraulic control signal is produced
- Main hydraulic multi‑way valve is actuated
- Cylinders and motors execute actions with adjustable speed and direction
Proportional Speed Regulation
Greater handle tilt angle expands spool opening → elevates output pilot pressure → increases main valve opening → accelerates boom, stick, bucket and slewing movements. After releasing the handle, return springs restore the handle and spool to neutral, cutting the pilot oil circuit, releasing pressure, resetting the main valve, and instantly stopping all motions.
