At its fundamental level, the excavator joystick is a hydraulic pilot proportional control valve. Rather than directly actuating excavator movements, it outputs pilot control oil to engage the main multi‑way valve, governing movement speed and direction. Installed on the left and right sides of the operator cabin, the control lever (pilot control lever, hydraulic lever or joystick) is the central part for operating all excavator actions, acting as the machine’s “steering wheel and functional limbs”.
Operational Means
All excavator motions are controlled through multidirectional manipulation of the joystick:
- Boom (main arm) elevation
- Stick (secondary arm) extension and retraction
- Bucket opening and closing
- Left‑right slewing of the upper body
- Joint operation with foot pedal valves for traveling
Working Principle
Every handle contains an internal hydraulic pilot valve unit:
- Pushing the handle displaces the inner spool
- Low‑pressure hydraulic control signal is released
- Main multi‑way hydraulic valve is regulated
- Cylinders and motors deliver variable‑speed, directional movements
Proportional Speed Modulation
Increased handle tilt widens spool opening → raises output pilot pressure → expands main valve opening → accelerates boom, stick, bucket and slewing performance. Upon handle release, return springs reset the handle and spool to neutral, sealing the pilot oil circuit, releasing pressure, resetting the main valve, and halting all actions instantly.
