The excavator joystick is basically a proportional hydraulic pilot control valve that cannot directly drive machine movements. It provides control‑signal hydraulic oil to trigger the main multi‑way valve, adjusting the velocity and direction of excavator operations. Placed on both sides of the cabin, the control lever (also named pilot lever, hydraulic handle or joystick) is the core operating component for all excavator functions, likened to the excavator’s “steering wheel and manipulative limbs”.
Working Manner
Control all excavator functions by moving the joystick in multiple directions:
- Main arm boom lifting
- Secondary arm stick extending and retracting
- Bucket opening and clamping
- Left‑right rotation of the cab assembly
- Combined use with foot pedal valves for travel control
Operating Mechanism
Each control handle is fitted with an internal hydraulic pilot valve:
- Handle movement pushes the internal spool
- Low‑pressure hydraulic signal is generated
- Main hydraulic multi‑way valve is activated
- Cylinders and motors run at different speeds and directions
Proportional Speed Adjustment
The larger the handle tilt angle, the bigger the spool opening → higher pilot oil pressure → wider main valve opening → quicker boom, stick, bucket and slewing motions. When released, reset springs bring the handle and spool back to center, cutting the pilot oil flow, discharging pressure, resetting the main valve, and stopping all movements immediately.
