Function
Acting as the prime power supplier for excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump receives drive force from the engine and transforms mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It feeds pressurized fluid to boom, arm, bucket, travelling and slewing hydraulic motors to facilitate all digging motions of the machine.
Product Classification
Axial variable displacement piston pumps are universally equipped on construction diggers. Medium and large tonnage excavators adopt one-piece double main pump structure, alongside an integrated pilot gear pump mounted on the rear casing.
The double main pump consists of two independent pumping units running at 28~35MPa; each feeds oil to different ports of the main control valve to achieve combined compound movements. The tail-mounted pilot pump runs under 3~4MPa low pressure with small flow volume, delivering control oil to pilot handles and main valve spools.

Internal Construction
The pump housing and cylinder block assembly contain multiple piston assemblies that absorb and compress hydraulic oil synchronously as the main shaft spins. The swash plate’s inclined angle determines piston travel distance and overall pump displacement. An externally fitted servo regulator pushes the swash plate via hydraulic signal: bigger tilt equals larger displacement, higher flow and faster working speed; smaller tilt cuts oil output, lowers fuel consumption and prevents engine flameout under overload. The valve plate partitions intake cavity and high-pressure delivery cavity to complete oil distribution.
Three Major Control Technologies
Constant power regulation automatically shrinks pump displacement when load rises, making full use of engine power and avoiding engine stall. Load sensing (LS) system supplies oil flow matching actual system demand and keeps low displacement at idle for fuel conservation. HP pressure cutoff drops pump displacement to the minimum instantly once system pressure hits upper limit, safeguarding hydraulic hoses and cylinders from burst damage.
Common Abnormal Conditions
Worn pistons or valve plate triggering inner leakage, or stuck regulator will lead to slow and feeble machine movements. If the regulator is locked at maximum displacement, excessive oil output brings engine overload, black exhaust smoke and stall. Severe internal leakage turns pressure loss into thermal energy and pushes hydraulic oil temperature abnormally high. Air entering the pipeline, insufficient hydraulic fluid or damaged internal bearings and pistons will generate strange knocking noise from the pump body.
Maintenance Instructions
Replace hydraulic oil and matching filter elements on schedule to avoid abrasive impurities scratching precision internal parts. Ensure tight sealing of suction pipelines to block air infiltration, which would trigger pump noise and machine shaking. Keep hydraulic liquid at marked standard level to avoid irreversible pump damage.
