Core Function
Every excavator relies on its hydraulic main pump as the beating heart of the hydraulic setup. Driven by the vehicle’s engine, this key component turns rotational mechanical energy into pressurized hydraulic oil, powering boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing motors to finish all digging and moving work.
Available Pump Variants
Axial variable piston pumps dominate the excavator industry globally. Mid and large diggers commonly equip integrated twin main pumps, with a compact pilot gear pump fixed at the pump rear side.
Two separate pumping sections of the main pump operate independently at 28~35MPa to feed oil into different valve ports for smooth combined movements. The small pilot pump behind works at merely 3~4MPa, delivering low-pressure control oil to pilot levers and inner spools of the main control valve.

Internal Build-up
Multiple pistons installed inside cylinder block rotate alongside the main spindle to draw in and compress hydraulic oil. By changing its tilt angle, the swash plate controls how far each piston moves and decides total pump output volume. The side-mounted regulator responds to hydraulic signals to tilt the swash plate: steeper angle = bigger flow & faster machine action; flatter angle = smaller flow, less fuel cost and no engine stall under heavy load. The valve plate separates intake and high-pressure outlet paths to distribute oil orderly.
Three Built-in Intelligent Control Systems
- Constant power control cuts pump output automatically under heavy loads so the engine never stalls and works at full rated efficiency.
LS load sensing only produces as much oil as the machine actually needs, running on low displacement and saving fuel while idling.
- Pressure cut-off instantly drops pump flow to minimum when pressure hits limit, protecting tubes and hydraulic cylinders from bursting due to overpressure.
Typical Operating Troubles
Scuffed pistons or valve plate leading to inner leakage or stuck regulator slow down the whole machine and weaken digging force. Regulator locked on large displacement makes engine overloaded, releasing thick black smoke. Serious internal leakage generates extra heat and overheats hydraulic oil. Air sucked into pipelines, insufficient oil level or broken bearings/pistons cause weird pump noises during operation.
Daily Maintenance Tips
Swap hydraulic oil and relevant filters on schedule to stop dirt scratching inner precision parts; make sure suction tubes are fully sealed to block air intake and machine shaking; always keep hydraulic oil at standard height to avoid sudden pump breakdown.
