Working Principle & Function
The main hydraulic pump takes engine’s rotational mechanical power and transforms it into high-pressure hydraulic power, delivering pressurized fluid to boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing hydraulic motors, which makes all excavator hydraulic movements possible.
Common Pump Forms
Nearly all digging machines adopt axial variable piston pump design; mid-to-large excavators use unified dual main pump structure with a pilot gear pump mounted on the pump rear end.
Two independent pumping parts of main pump run at 28~35MPa and feed oil separately into different main valve ports to support multi-action compound operation. The rear pilot pump runs at low 3~4MPa pressure to supply control oil for pilot joysticks and inner spools of main control valve.

Internal Component Introduction
Multiple piston sets installed inside cylinder block suck and compress hydraulic oil while the main shaft rotates. Changing swash plate tilt alters piston travel and overall pump displacement size. The externally fixed regulator uses hydraulic pressure signal to adjust swash position: bigger tilt brings larger flow and faster movement; smaller tilt reduces flow output to save fuel and avoid engine stall under overload condition. Valve plate isolates low-pressure intake and high-pressure discharge cavities to complete oil distribution.
Three Main Control Functions
Constant power function lowers pump displacement as load rises to fully utilize engine power and avoid flameout; LS load sensing only outputs needed flow and keeps small displacement to save fuel at idle; pressure cut-off sharply reduces pump displacement to minimum value when pressure reaches limit value to protect hoses and cylinders from overpressure damage.
Frequently Seen Failures
Piston/valve plate wear-induced internal leakage or stuck regulator will slow down the whole machine and weaken digging power. Regulator stuck on large displacement position leads to excess flow, engine overload and black smoke. Severe internal leakage turns pressure loss into heat and overheats hydraulic oil; air entering pipeline, insufficient oil or damaged bearings/pistons cause abnormal pump noise.
Practical Maintenance Suggestion
Renew hydraulic oil and matched filters regularly to prevent impurity scratch on precision parts; seal suction pipeline tightly to block air intake and machine shaking; keep hydraulic oil at standard level to avoid pump premature damage.
