Purpose
The hydraulic main pump supplies core hydraulic power for excavators and is driven by the unit’s engine, transforming mechanical rotation into high-pressure hydraulic fluid to actuate boom, dipper, bucket, track and slew motors.
Classification
Almost all construction excavators utilise axial variable piston pumps; medium and heavy plant machinery uses combined twin main pump with pilot gear pump fixed at rear casing.

Inner Structure
Cylinder block fitted with multiple pistons absorbs and compresses oil during spindle rotation. Variable swash plate angle determines piston stroke and pump swept volume. External servo adjusts swash position via hydraulic pilot signal: steeper tilt brings higher flow and faster operation; gentler tilt reduces fuel consumption and avoids engine cut-out under overload. Valve plate separates inlet and delivery ports for fluid diversion.
Core Control Features
Constant power function reduces pump output as load rises to maximise engine efficiency and stop stalling. Load sensing matches flow output to actual operational needs and saves fuel under no-load status. Pressure cut-back minimises pump displacement at maximum pressure to protect hydraulic fittings from overpressure rupture.
Typical Faults
Internal leakage from worn friction pairs or stuck regulator makes machine run slowly with insufficient digging force. Permanently large pump displacement causes engine overloading and black exhaust fumes. Excessive internal leakage leads to abnormal high oil temperature. Air intake or inadequate lubrication creates unusual pump rattling.
Servicing Guidelines
Carry out periodic oil and filter replacement, maintain airtight suction pipework and retain specified hydraulic oil height to lengthen pump service lifespan.
