Core Operation
Mounted and driven by excavator engine, hydraulic main pump turns mechanical rotational power into high-pressure hydraulic fluid to feed boom, arm, bucket, track drive and swing motors for all digging functions.
Pump Classification
Axial variable piston pumps come as factory standard on construction excavators; mid-size and large rigs feature integrated dual main pump with pilot gear pump mounted at rear end. Dual pump works at 28~35MPa for independent oil supply and combined motions; rear pilot pump runs at 3~4MPa for pilot control circuit.
Internal Layout
Cylinder block houses multiple piston sets that draw and pressurize oil as main shaft spins. Swash plate tilt sets piston stroke and total pump output volume. External hydraulic servo modifies swash tilt based on pressure feedback: bigger tilt = higher flow & faster work speed; smaller tilt = lower fuel burn and no engine die-off under heavy load. Valve plate keeps inlet and high-pressure outlet isolated for proper fluid routing.
Three Key Control Functions
Constant power control reduces pump delivery as load rises to maximize engine power and prevent stall. Load sensing regulates flow to match real-time machine need and saves fuel at idle condition. Pressure cut-off instantly minimizes pump displacement when pressure hits upper limit to stop hose and cylinder blowout.
Common Operational Troubles
Worn internal friction parts causing leakage or stuck regulator slow down machine operation and reduce digging power. Regulator stuck at maximum displacement overloads engine and produces thick black exhaust. Major internal leakage turns lost pressure into heat and overheats hydraulic fluid. Air intake, low oil level or damaged bearings create weird pump noise.
Routine Service
Change hydraulic oil and filters per maintenance schedule, seal all suction lines against air leakage and maintain specified oil level to extend pump service life.
