Powered by the excavator engine, the hydraulic main pump provides core hydraulic power for all machine actions. It turns mechanical energy into high-pressure oil to drive boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing systems. Standard axial variable piston structure is adopted for general excavators, while mid-large machines use dual main pumps with rear pilot pumps. The main pump works at 28~35MPa and the pilot pump works at 3~4MPa for control purposes. The pump assembly includes pistons, cylinder block, adjustable swash plate, regulator and valve plate to control displacement, flow and fuel consumption. Three intelligent systems prevent engine stall, save fuel and protect hydraulic parts. Common issues are weak operation, engine black smoke, hot oil and strange pump noise. Timely oil and filter replacement, airtight pipelines and proper oil levels help lower failure rates.
