Function
As the heart of an excavator’s hydraulic system, the main hydraulic pump is powered by the engine. It converts mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic power, and delivers pressurized oil to hydraulic motors for boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing, so as to drive all machine movements.
Type
Most construction excavators use axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavators are fitted with combined twin main pumps plus a rear pilot gear pump.
The two high-pressure pumps feature separate oil circuits, supplying oil to different ports of the main control valve for combined movements, with working pressure ranging from 28 to 35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump at the pump end works at 3~4MPa with small flow, supplying control oil for operation levers and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
The shell and cylinder block work with multiple pistons that rotate with the main shaft to finish oil suction and pressurization.
The swash plate adjusts its tilt angle to change piston stroke and pump displacement.
The external servo controller adjusts the swash plate based on hydraulic feedback. A larger tilt angle increases displacement and flow for faster operation; a smaller angle cuts fuel use and prevents engine stalling.
The valve plate divides low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet to distribute hydraulic oil.

Three Control Modes
Constant power control automatically cuts pump displacement when load rises, protecting the engine and making full use of power.
The LS load sensing system supplies oil as required. It keeps low displacement at idle to save fuel.
The HP pressure limit function reduces pump displacement at maximum system pressure, protecting hydraulic pipes and cylinders from damage.

Common Failures
Worn pistons, damaged valve plates or blocked regulators cause internal leakage, leading to slow movement and weak power.
If the regulator sticks at maximum displacement, the engine will overload, emit black smoke and stall under heavy loads.
Severe internal leakage turns pressure loss into heat, causing excessive hydraulic oil temperature.
Air in the oil, insufficient hydraulic fluid or faulty bearings and pistons will create unusual noise.

Maintenance
Regularly replace hydraulic oil and filters to avoid wear on precision components. Keep suction pipes well sealed to prevent air intake and machine vibration. Maintain hydraulic oil at standard level to protect the pump.
