Function
As the core power unit of excavator hydraulic systems, the hydraulic main pump is driven by the engine. It realizes energy conversion from mechanical form to high-pressure hydraulic form, and delivers pressurized oil to various hydraulic motors to drive boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing movements.
Type
Axial variable piston pumps are extensively applied on construction excavators. Medium and large excavators are fitted with combined dual main pumps and a rear pilot gear pump.
The dual high-pressure pumps feature independent oil passages, feeding oil to the main control valve to achieve combined actions, with working pressure of 28 to 35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump mounted on the pump tail works at 3~4MPa with small flow, providing control oil for operating levers and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
The pump housing and cylinder block contain multiple piston groups, which rotate synchronously with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressurization.
Changing the swash plate tilt angle can adjust piston stroke and pump volumetric displacement.
Based on hydraulic feedback signals, the external servo regulator drives the swash plate. A larger angle increases displacement and flow for faster work; a smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and avoids engine stall.The valve plate divides inlet and outlet oil to complete fluid distribution.

Three Control Modes
Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement when load grows, protecting the engine and making full use of output power.
The LS load sensing system provides flow as needed and keeps low displacement at idle to lower fuel consumption.
The HP pressure limiting function minimizes pump displacement when system pressure hits the peak, protecting hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture.

Common Failures
Internal leakage due to worn pistons, damaged valve plates or clogged regulators leads to slow operation and inadequate power.
If the regulator is fixed at maximum displacement, the engine will overload, emit black smoke and stall under heavy loads.
Too much internal leakage turns pressure loss into heat, causing hydraulic oil temperature to rise abnormally.
Air entrainment, insufficient oil or faulty bearings and pistons will result in unusual running noise.

Maintenance
Regularly renew hydraulic oil and filters to prevent abrasion on precision components. Ensure tight sealing of suction lines to prevent air intake and machine vibration. Maintain hydraulic fluid at standard level to avoid pump malfunctions.
