Function
The hydraulic main pump is an essential power component of excavator hydraulic systems. Driven by the prime engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and transports pressurized medium to hydraulic motors to drive boom, arm, bucket, traveling and slewing movements.
Type
Axial variable displacement piston pumps are the mainstream for construction excavators. Medium and large excavators use integrated double main pumps equipped with a rear pilot gear pump.
The twin high-pressure pumps adopt individual oil supply passages, feeding oil to different ports of the main control valve for compound actions, with working pressure 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the pump rear works at 3~4MPa with low flow, supplying pilot control oil for operating handles and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
The housing and cylinder block hold several piston assemblies. They rotate together with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressure generation.
Adjusting the swash plate inclination can change piston stroke and pump volumetric displacement.
The external servo regulator drives the swash plate according to hydraulic feedback. Larger angle increases flow rate and operation speed; smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and prevents engine stall.
The valve plate separates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet to realize fluid distribution.

The HP pressure limiting function lowers pump displacement at peak system pressure to protect hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture.

Common Failures
Worn pistons, damaged valve plates or clogged regulators cause internal leakage, which results in slow operation and power shortage.
A locked regulator at maximum displacement will lead to engine overload, black exhaust and stall under heavy working conditions.
Severe internal leakage produces extra heat and triggers abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. Air entrainment, low oil level or defective parts will cause abnormal noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filters on a regular basis to prevent abrasive damage to precision components. Ensure suction pipelines are tightly sealed to avoid air intake and equipment vibration. Keep hydraulic fluid at the standard level to prevent pump failure.
