Function
Driven by the excavator engine, the hydraulic main pump is the key component of the hydraulic system. It converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and delivers pressurized fluid to various hydraulic motors to drive boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing operations.
Type
Axial variable displacement piston pumps are widely adopted on engineering excavators. Medium and large excavators use combined dual main pumps with a rear pilot gear pump.
The two high-pressure pumps have independent oil supply passages, which feed oil to the main control valve to realize composite actions, with working pressure of 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump at the pump tail operates at 3~4MPa with low flow, supplying pilot control oil for operating levers and main valve spools.

Three Control Modes
Constant power regulation automatically lowers pump displacement under increased load to protect the engine and improve power utilization.
The LS load sensing system provides flow on demand and keeps low displacement during idling to reduce fuel consumption.
The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure to prevent hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture.

Common Failures
Internal leakage caused by worn pistons, damaged valve plates or blocked regulators leads to slow operation and insufficient output power.
Regulator locked at maximum displacement will cause engine overload, black smoke and stall under heavy load.
Excessive internal leakage generates heat from pressure loss and causes hydraulic oil temperature to rise abnormally. Air entrainment, insufficient oil or damaged parts will produce abnormal noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filters periodically to prevent precision parts from abrasive wear. Keep suction pipelines sealed well to avoid air intake and equipment vibration. Maintain hydraulic fluid at standard level.
