Function
Powered by the engine, the hydraulic main pump is the heart of excavator hydraulic circuits. It converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and conveys pressurized medium to all hydraulic motors to drive every working motion of the machine.
Type
Axial variable piston pumps are widely applied to engineering excavators. Medium and large size excavators use integrated dual main pumps together with a rear-mounted pilot gear pump.
Two independent high-pressure oil paths supply the main control valve to realize combined actions, with working pressure ranging from 28 to 35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump on the pump tail operates at 3~4MPa with low flow, providing pilot control oil for operating handles and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
Multiple piston assemblies rotate synchronously with the main shaft inside the housing and cylinder block to finish oil suction and pressurization.
The swash plate adjusts its inclination angle to change piston stroke and pump displacement. The external servo regulator controls the swash plate according to hydraulic feedback signals.
Larger tilt angle raises flow rate and operation speed; smaller tilt angle reduces fuel use and avoids engine stall.

Constant power regulation automatically reduces pump displacement when load increases, protecting the engine and making full use of power output.

The HP pressure limiting function minimizes pump displacement at peak system pressure to safeguard hydraulic pipes and cylinders from rupture.

Common Failures
Worn pistons, faulty valve plates or clogged regulators cause internal leakage, leading to slow operation and power deficiency.
Regulator stuck at maximum displacement will make the engine overload, produce black smoke and stall under heavy loads.
Too much internal leakage turns pressure loss into heat, causing abnormal rise of hydraulic oil temperature. Air intake, low oil level or damaged parts will generate unusual noise.

Maintenance
Perform regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent abrasive wear on precision components. Ensure good tightness of suction pipelines to avoid air entry and equipment vibration. Keep hydraulic fluid at the standard level.
