Function
The main hydraulic pump is the main power part of an excavator’s hydraulic system. The engine drives it to turn mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic power. It then sends pressurized oil to hydraulic motors to run the boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing functions.
Type
Most engineering excavators use axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavators come with integrated twin main pumps and a pilot gear pump at the rear.
These two high-pressure pumps have separate oil lines, feeding the main control valve to do combined movements, with working pressure at 28~35MPa.
The rear pilot pump works at 3~4MPa with low flow, supplying control oil for levers and valve spools.

Three Control Modes
Constant power control cuts pump displacement when load gets heavier, protecting the engine and using power efficiently.
The LS load sensing system sends oil only when needed, and uses less fuel when the machine idles.
The HP pressure limit lowers pump displacement at maximum pressure, stopping pipes and cylinders from breaking.

Common Failures
Worn pistons, broken valve plates or blocked regulators cause internal leakage, making the machine slow and weak.
If the regulator gets stuck at maximum displacement, the engine will be overloaded, blow black smoke and stall under heavy work.
Heavy leakage creates extra heat and makes hydraulic oil too hot. Air in the oil or broken parts will cause strange noises.

Maintenance
Change hydraulic oil and filters regularly to stop precision parts from wearing out. Make sure suction pipes are sealed so no air gets in and the machine doesn’t vibrate. Always keep hydraulic oil at the right level.
