Function
As the core power executing component within the hydraulic circuit of excavators, the hydraulic main pump receives driving force from the prime engine, accomplishes the energy conversion from mechanical energy to high-pressure hydraulic energy, and conveys the pressurized working medium to each hydraulic motor, so as to actuate the overall operational movements including boom lifting, stick movement, bucket digging, chassis traveling and upper structure slewing.
Type
Axial variable displacement piston pumps have gained wide application on modern engineering excavators. For excavators of medium and large tonnage classes, an integrated structure combining dual main pumps and a rear arranged pilot gear pump is commonly adopted.
The two high-pressure main pumps are designed with mutually independent oil supply passages, which deliver hydraulic oil to different ports of the main control valve to realize coordinated composite movements, with a rated working pressure ranging between 28MPa and 35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the tail section of the pump assembly operates at a working pressure of 3~4MPa with a relatively low flow rate, and is responsible for providing pilot control pressure oil for operating handles and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
The pump housing and cylinder block accommodate a set of piston assemblies, which rotate synchronously along with the main shaft to perform continuous oil suction and pressure accumulation processes.
The swash plate is a key adjustable component, whose tilt angle can be changed to regulate piston stroke and further adjust the volumetric displacement of the pump.
The external servo regulating mechanism drives the swash plate in response to hydraulic feedback signals. An increase in tilt angle will enhance pump displacement and flow rate to accelerate operational speed, while a decrease in tilt angle can reduce fuel consumption and eliminate the risk of engine stall.
The valve plate functions to separate the low-pressure oil inlet and high-pressure oil outlet, realizing the directional distribution of hydraulic fluid.

Three Control Modes
Constant power regulation can automatically decrease pump displacement when external load increases, which effectively protects the engine from stalling and realizes the maximum utilization of output power.
The LS load sensing system is capable of supplying hydraulic flow according to actual working demands, and maintains a low displacement state during idling operation to reduce fuel consumption.
The HP pressure limiting protection mechanism will reduce pump displacement to the minimum when the system pressure reaches its peak value, so as to prevent hydraulic pipelines and hydraulic cylinders from rupture and permanent damage.
The LS load sensing system is capable of supplying hydraulic flow according to actual working demands, and maintains a low displacement state during idling operation to reduce fuel consumption.

Common Failures
Worn piston components, defective valve plates or blocked regulating mechanisms will trigger internal leakage inside the pump, manifesting as slow machine operation and inadequate output power.
If the regulating mechanism is stuck at the maximum displacement position, the engine will suffer overload, exhaust black smoke and eventually stall under heavy load conditions.
Severe internal leakage will convert pressure loss into heat energy, resulting in an abnormal temperature rise of hydraulic oil. Air mixed into the hydraulic system, insufficient hydraulic fluid or damaged bearings and pistons will generate abnormal mechanical noise during operation.
If the regulating mechanism is stuck at the maximum displacement position, the engine will suffer overload, exhaust black smoke and eventually stall under heavy load conditions.

Maintenance
It is required to replace hydraulic oil and filter elements periodically to avoid abrasive wear on precision internal components. The tightness of suction pipelines shall be guaranteed to prevent air ingestion and equipment vibration. Hydraulic fluid level must be kept within the standard range to avoid pump malfunction.
