Function
The hydraulic main pump is the primary power component of excavator hydraulic systems. Driven by the engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and delivers pressurized medium to hydraulic motors to drive boom, stick, bucket, travel and swing operations.
Type
Axial variable piston pumps are extensively used on engineering excavators. Medium and large excavators adopt integrated dual main pumps with a rear pilot gear pump.
The dual high-pressure pumps have independent oil supply routes, feeding the main control valve for composite actions, with working pressure 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump at the pump tail operates at 3~4MPa with low flow, providing pilot control oil for operating handles and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
Multiple piston assemblies inside the housing and cylinder block rotate with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressurization.
The swash plate adjusts tilt angle to change piston stroke and pump displacement. The external servo regulator controls the swash plate via hydraulic feedback signals.
A larger tilt angle increases flow and operation speed; a smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and prevents engine stall.

Constant power regulation automatically lowers pump displacement under increased load to protect the engine and optimize power use.

The HP pressure limiting function minimizes pump displacement at peak pressure to protect hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture.

Common Failures
Internal leakage caused by worn pistons, damaged valve plates or blocked regulators leads to slow operation and insufficient power output.
Regulator locked at maximum displacement causes engine overload, black smoke and stall under heavy loads.
Excessive internal leakage generates extra heat and causes hydraulic oil temperature to rise abnormally. Air entrainment, low hydraulic fluid or damaged bearings and pistons result in abnormal noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filters regularly to prevent abrasive damage to precision parts. Keep suction pipelines tightly sealed to avoid air intake and equipment vibration. Maintain hydraulic fluid at the standard level to ensure normal pump operation.
