Acting as the core power source for an excavator’s hydraulic system, the main hydraulic pump is driven by the engine. It converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and feeds pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors to power all the excavator’s working motions. Most construction excavators employ axial variable displacement piston pumps as their main hydraulic pumps. Medium and large construction machinery is fitted with an integrated dual main pump system paired with a rear pilot gear pump assembly. Two independent high-pressure oil pipelines transport fluid to the main control valve to enable compound working movements, with a rated operating pressure of 28 to 35MPa. The rear low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with a low flow rate, supplying pilot pressure oil for the operation of control levers and main valve spools. Within the pump, piston units installed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate in sync with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressure buildup. Adjusting the swash plate tilt angle alters the piston stroke, which changes the pump’s displacement volume. The external servo regulator drives swash plate movement according to hydraulic feedback signals. A greater swash plate angle increases fluid flow and working speed, while a smaller angle cuts fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate divides low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to achieve hydraulic oil distribution. The pump features three intelligent control modes. Constant power control lowers pump displacement with rising loads, safeguarding the engine and improving power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system delivers fluid on demand and maintains low displacement during idling to save fuel. The HP pressure limiting mode reduces pump displacement at peak pressure, avoiding cracking of hydraulic pipes and cylinders. Common faults include internal leakage triggered by piston wear, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, which causes slow operation and insufficient power. A regulator stuck at maximum displacement leads to engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling under heavy loads. Severe internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat, causing abnormal overheating of hydraulic oil. Air ingress, insufficient hydraulic oil, and damaged bearings or pistons result in unusual operating noise. Daily maintenance involves timely replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to protect precision internal parts from wear. Tight sealing of suction pipelines must be ensured to prevent air intake and equipment vibration, and hydraulic oil levels should be kept standard to sustain stable pump efficiency.
