The main hydraulic pump acts as the prime power component for an excavator’s hydraulic circuit system. Powered by the vehicle engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and delivers pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors, driving all functional operations of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are the dominant main hydraulic pumps used on engineering excavators. Medium and large construction machines are equipped with an integrated twin main pump system integrated with a rear pilot gear pump module. Two independent high-pressure oil delivery lines feed fluid into the main control valve to accomplish composite working actions, with a standard operating pressure range of 28 to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the machine tail operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for the movement of control levers and main valve spools. Within the pump structure, piston assemblies fixed to the cylinder block and pump housing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressure generation. Adjusting the swash plate’s inclination alters piston stroke dimensions, thus changing the pump’s overall displacement capacity. The external servo regulator actuates swash plate displacement according to hydraulic feedback signals from the system. A larger swash plate angle improves fluid flow volume and operation speed, while a smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and resolves engine stalling problems. The valve plate separates low-pressure intake passages and high-pressure discharge passages to finish hydraulic oil distribution. Three intelligent control modes are preset for the pump system. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement as external load increases, protecting the engine and optimizing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system supplies hydraulic fluid according to actual working demands and maintains low displacement during idling to achieve fuel savings. The HP pressure limiting mode decreases pump displacement once the system pressure hits its peak value, preventing cracking failures of hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders. Common pump failures involve internal leakage caused by piston wear, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, resulting in slow machine response and power deficiency. If the regulator is locked in the maximum displacement position, the engine will experience overload, black smoke emission and stalling under heavy working loads. Severe internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat, leading to abnormal temperature rise of hydraulic oil. Air entering the hydraulic system, insufficient oil capacity, and defective bearings or pistons will produce abnormal running noise. Routine maintenance work includes timely replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent wear on precision internal components. Suction pipelines must be fully sealed to avoid air suction and mechanical vibration, and hydraulic oil levels should be kept at the specified standard to ensure stable pump working performance.
