The main hydraulic pump constitutes the core power unit of an excavator’s hydraulic circuit. Powered by the engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and feeds pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors, driving all functional operations of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps serve as the main hydraulic pumps for most engineering excavators. Medium and large construction machines are equipped with an integrated twin main pump system coupled with a rear pilot gear pump module. Two independent high-pressure oil delivery lines supply fluid to the main control valve to accomplish composite working motions, with a standard working pressure ranging from 28 to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump mounted at the tail runs at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control lever manipulation and main valve spool movement. Inside the pump structure, piston assemblies fixed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressure generation processes. Adjusting the swash plate’s tilt angle alters piston stroke, thus changing the pump’s displacement capability. The external servo regulator drives swash plate movement according to real-time hydraulic feedback signals. A larger swash plate angle increases fluid flow volume and operational speed, while a smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and resolves engine stalling issues. The valve plate segregates low-pressure intake and high-pressure discharge channels to finish hydraulic oil distribution. Three smart control modes are integrated into the pump system. Constant power control automatically cuts pump displacement as external load increases, protecting engine performance and optimizing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides adaptive fluid flow based on working demands and maintains low idle displacement to achieve fuel savings. The HP pressure limiting function lowers pump displacement when system pressure reaches its peak, preventing hydraulic pipeline and cylinder cracking faults. Common pump malfunctions involve internal leakage caused by piston abrasion, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, leading to slow machine response and power shortage. If the regulator is locked at maximum displacement, the engine will suffer overload, emit black smoke and stall under heavy working loads. Severe internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat, triggering abnormal overheating of hydraulic oil. Air entering the hydraulic system, insufficient oil capacity, and damaged bearings or pistons generate abnormal running noise. Routine maintenance involves prompt replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent wear on precision internal components. Suction pipeline tightness must be guaranteed to avoid air suction and equipment vibration, and hydraulic oil levels should be kept standard to ensure stable pump working performance.
