The main hydraulic pump is the fundamental power component of an excavator’s hydraulic circuit system. Driven by the onboard engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and supplies pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors, enabling all operational motions of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are the mainstream choice for main hydraulic pumps on engineering excavators. Medium and large construction machines utilize an integrated twin main pump system paired with a rear pilot gear pump module. Two independent high-pressure oil supply lines convey hydraulic fluid to the main control valve to enable combined working functions, with a standard working pressure range of 28 to 35MPa. The tail-end low-pressure pilot pump runs at 3–4MPa with low flow output, offering pilot pressure oil for the operation of control levers and main valve spools. Within the pump body, piston assemblies installed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressure accumulation cycles. Adjusting the swash plate’s tilt angle changes piston stroke dimensions, thus altering the pump’s displacement capacity. The external servo regulator actuates swash plate movement based on system hydraulic feedback signals. A larger swash plate angle enhances fluid delivery and operating speed, while a smaller angle minimizes fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate isolates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet channels to distribute hydraulic oil orderly. Three intelligent control modes are preset for pump operation. Constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement as external load increases, safeguarding the engine and optimizing power utilization rates. The LS load-sensing system supplies fluid according to actual working demands and maintains low idle displacement to realize fuel savings. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement when pressure reaches its maximum value, avoiding cracking of hydraulic pipelines and cylinders. Common malfunctions include internal leakage caused by piston abrasion, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, leading to sluggish machine operation and insufficient power output. When the regulator is locked at maximum displacement, the engine will experience overload, black smoke emission and stalling under heavy loads. Severe internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat energy, causing abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. Air entering the hydraulic system, insufficient oil quantity, and defective bearings or pistons produce abnormal running noise. Routine maintenance demands regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to protect precision internal components from wear. Tight sealing of suction pipelines must be ensured to prevent air inhalation and mechanical vibration, and hydraulic oil levels should be kept at the specified standard to sustain stable pump efficiency.
