As the pivotal power component of excavator hydraulic systems, the main hydraulic pump is engine-driven to turn mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It transports pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to actuate all working actions of the excavator. The majority of engineering excavators adopt axial variable displacement piston pumps as their main hydraulic pumps. Medium and large-sized excavators feature integrated dual main pumps paired with a rear pilot gear pump unit. Two individual high-pressure oil supply lines deliver fluid to the main control valve to enable compound working movements, with a standard working pressure of 28MPa to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the machine tail works at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool operation. Inside the pump body, piston assemblies fixed on the cylinder block and pump casing rotate with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization processes. Swash plate angle adjustment modifies piston stroke, which changes the pump’s displacement value. The external servo regulator responds to hydraulic feedback to drive swash plate movement. Enlarging the swash plate angle boosts flow rate and working speed, while reducing it lowers fuel consumption and eliminates engine stalling issues. The valve plate segregates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to finish hydraulic oil distribution. The pump incorporates three functional control technologies. Constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement under growing load pressure, protecting the engine and enhancing power utilization rate. The LS load-sensing system delivers flow as actual working conditions require and maintains low idle displacement for fuel conservation. The HP pressure limiting function decreases pump displacement at peak pressure values, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture damage. Common operational faults include internal leakage stemming from worn pistons, damaged valve plates or blocked regulators, leading to slow operation and power insufficiency. A regulator locked at maximum displacement causes engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling during heavy-load work. Excessive internal leakage generates thermal energy from pressure loss, resulting in abnormal hydraulic oil temperature elevation. Air ingestion, low hydraulic oil level, and faulty bearings and pistons will produce abnormal operating noise. Maintenance requires periodic replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to prevent abrasion of precision internal components. Ensure excellent sealing of suction pipes to avoid air intake and equipment vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at the specified level to sustain stable pump working performance.
