As the key power equipment for excavator hydraulic systems, the main hydraulic pump is engine-powered to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It conveys pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to drive all working movements of the excavator. The vast majority of engineering excavators adopt axial variable displacement piston pumps as their main hydraulic power units. Medium and large-sized excavators feature an integrated structure of dual main pumps and a rear-mounted pilot gear pump unit. Two individual high-pressure oil supply lines deliver fluid to the main control valve to realize compound working motions, with a standard working pressure of 28MPa to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the machine tail works at 3–4MPa with low flow output, offering pilot pressure oil for control lever and main valve spool actuation. Inside the pump body, piston assemblies mounted on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization processes. Swash plate inclination adjustment changes piston stroke, which directly modifies pump displacement values. The external servo regulator responds to hydraulic feedback to drive swash plate movement. Expanding the tilt angle increases flow rate and working speed, while narrowing it reduces fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate segregates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to complete hydraulic oil distribution. The pump has three integrated control modes for multi-scene operation. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under growing loads, protecting the engine and enhancing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides flow based on actual working needs and maintains low idle displacement for fuel savings. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement when pressure reaches peak values, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture. Common operational failures include internal leakage stemming from worn pistons, damaged valve plates or clogged regulators, leading to slow machine operation and power insufficiency. A regulator locked at maximum displacement causes engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling during heavy-load work. Excessive internal leakage generates heat from pressure loss, resulting in abnormal hydraulic oil temperature elevation. Air ingestion, low hydraulic oil level, and faulty bearings and pistons will produce abnormal operating noise. Maintenance requires periodic replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to avoid abrasion of precision internal components. Ensure excellent sealing of suction pipes to prevent air intake and equipment vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at the specified level to sustain stable pump working performance.
