Serving as the pivotal power component in excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump receives drive power from the engine and converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. By conveying pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors, it enables all functional movements of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are widely installed on most engineering excavators. Mid-to-large size excavator models feature an integrated dual main pump structure paired with a rear-mounted pilot gear pump unit. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits deliver oil to the main control valve, supporting simultaneous compound operations, with rated working pressure ranging from 28MPa to 35MPa. Positioned at the machine rear, the low-pressure pilot pump works at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle manipulation and main valve spool adjustment. Piston groups mounted on the cylinder block and pump casing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization cycles. Altering the swash plate’s tilt angle changes piston stroke length, which in turn adjusts the pump’s displacement. An external servo regulator governs swash plate movement according to real-time hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the swash plate angle raises flow rate and operational speed, whereas reducing it lowers fuel consumption and prevents engine shutdown. The valve plate isolates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to realize directional hydraulic oil distribution. The pump is fitted with three core control modules to ensure reliable operation. Constant power control intelligently reduces pump displacement under rising load conditions, protecting the engine and improving overall power efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides on-demand flow based on actual working needs and maintains low displacement during idling to save fuel. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure states, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from cracking and damage. Common operational failures include internal leakage stemming from worn pistons, cracked valve plates or clogged regulators, leading to sluggish movement and inadequate power output. A seized maximum-displacement regulator causes engine overload, black smoke and stalling during heavy-duty work. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, resulting in abnormal hydraulic oil overheating. System air entry, insufficient hydraulic fluid volume and defective bearings or pistons generate unusual operational noise. Daily maintenance requires periodic replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to prevent abrasion of precision internal components. Operators must guarantee excellent tightness of oil suction pipes to avoid air ingestion and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to preserve stable pump working performance.
