The main hydraulic pump, the core power element of excavator hydraulic systems, is powered by the engine to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It supplies pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to drive all working actions of the excavator. Most construction excavators are equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavators adopt an integrated assembly of dual main pumps and a rear pilot gear pump. Two standalone high-pressure oil supply circuits feed the main control valve, enabling compound working actions, with rated working pressure spanning 28MPa to 35MPa. The tail-mounted low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, offering pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool regulation. Piston assemblies fixed to the cylinder block and pump shell rotate alongside the main shaft, accomplishing oil suction and pressurization processes. Modifying the swash plate tilt angle adjusts piston stroke, thus changing the pump’s displacement value. An external servo regulator controls swash plate motion in response to hydraulic feedback data. A larger tilt angle increases flow rate and working speed, while a smaller angle reduces fuel usage and prevents engine flameout. The valve plate separates low-pressure intake and high-pressure outlet channels to distribute hydraulic oil evenly. Three key control functions ensure the pump’s dependable operation. Constant power control automatically cuts down pump displacement under increased loads, protecting the engine and boosting power utilization. The LS load-sensing system supplies flow volume tailored to actual working demands and maintains low idle displacement for fuel conservation. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure, protecting hydraulic tubes and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Frequent malfunctions include internal leakage caused by piston wear, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, resulting in slow operation and insufficient power delivery. A locked maximum-displacement regulator triggers engine overload, black smoke output and stalling during heavy-load operation. Excessive internal leakage turns pressure loss into heat, leading to abnormal hydraulic oil temperature elevation. Air infiltration into the system, low hydraulic oil levels and faulty bearings or pistons create abnormal operating sounds. Daily upkeep includes regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter cartridges to prevent wear of precision internal parts. It is necessary to maintain good tightness of oil suction pipelines to stop air intake and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to stabilize pump performance.
