Serving as the primary power unit of excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump receives engine driving power to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It transports pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to realize all functional working actions of the excavator. Most construction excavators are equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large excavators adopt an integrated dual main pump structure paired with a rear-mounted pilot gear pump. Two separate high-pressure oil supply loops feed the main control valve, allowing compound working motions, with a rated working pressure of 28MPa to 35MPa. Positioned at the machine rear, the low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for control handle manipulation and main valve spool adjustment. Piston groups secured on the cylinder block and pump shell rotate with the main shaft, finishing oil absorption and pressurization workflows. Modifying the swash plate inclination angle changes piston stroke length, which modulates the pump’s displacement capacity. An external servo actuator adjusts swash plate position based on real-time hydraulic feedback data. Enlarging the tilt angle boosts flow rate and operational efficiency, while narrowing it reduces fuel usage and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate partitions low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet channels to achieve directional hydraulic oil distribution. The pump is fitted with three essential control functions for stable and reliable operation. Constant power control automatically lowers pump displacement under heavy load conditions, protecting the engine and boosting power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides flow volume matching actual working demands and maintains low idle displacement for fuel economy. The HP pressure limiting function cuts pump displacement at peak pressure values, preventing rupture and damage to hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders. Typical faults involve internal leakage caused by worn pistons, broken valve plates or clogged regulators, resulting in slow operation and insufficient power output. A seized maximum-displacement regulator triggers engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling during heavy-duty tasks. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat energy, triggering abnormal hydraulic oil overheating. Air infiltration into the hydraulic system, inadequate hydraulic fluid volume and damaged bearings or pistons produce unusual operational noise. Regular daily maintenance includes replacing hydraulic oil and filter elements periodically to prevent wear of precision internal components. Ensuring excellent tightness of oil suction pipelines stops air ingestion and machine vibration, and maintaining standard hydraulic oil levels preserves stable pump performance.
