As the key power core of excavator hydraulic systems, the main hydraulic pump draws engine drive power to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It delivers pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to drive all working movements of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are widely installed on most engineering construction excavators. Mid and large-sized excavator units are fitted with an integrated dual main pump and rear pilot gear pump unit. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits deliver oil to the main control valve, supporting flexible compound working motions, with rated working pressure ranging from 28MPa to 35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump mounted at the machine tail works at 3–4MPa with low flow output, providing pilot pressure oil for control handle and main valve spool actuation. Piston assemblies fixed on the cylinder block and pump housing rotate alongside the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization cycles. Adjusting the swash plate tilt angle alters piston stroke, which regulates the pump’s displacement value. An external servo regulator controls swash plate motion according to hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the tilt angle improves flow rate and working speed, while reducing it minimizes fuel consumption and avoids engine flameout. The valve plate separates low-pressure intake and high-pressure outlet passages to distribute hydraulic oil uniformly. Three core control systems guarantee the pump’s reliable working performance. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under increased load pressure, protecting the engine and enhancing power utilization efficiency. The LS load-sensing system supplies flow based on actual working requirements and maintains low idle displacement for fuel saving. The HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement at peak pressure levels, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and oil cylinders from rupture damage. Common operational malfunctions include internal leakage due to piston wear, cracked valve plates or blocked regulators, leading to slow operating speed and inadequate power output. A locked maximum-displacement regulator results in engine overload, black smoke exhaust and stalling during heavy-load operation. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, causing abnormal rises in hydraulic oil temperature. System air intake, insufficient hydraulic oil volume and defective bearings or pistons generate abnormal operating noise. Daily maintenance requires regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to prevent abrasion of precision internal parts. It is essential to ensure tight sealing of oil suction pipes to avoid air ingestion and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at standard levels to maintain stable pump working performance.
