Specify black plastic thread protectors with the exact connection designation, nominal pipe size and pin or box end. For a replacement based on a sample, confirm its thread profile, engagement length and seal-area coverage against the current connection drawing before approving tooling.
HDPE and ABS are separate material choices. Define the grade, color reference, dimensional tolerances and required handling tests with the sample approval criteria. A matching color or outer diameter alone does not confirm thread fit or protection performance.

A plastic protector helps shield connection threads and seal areas during handling and storage. Check engagement and retention on the matching pin or box using the agreed inspection method. It is not a pressure cap or a lifting device.
Before reuse, inspect the protector for cracks, distorted threads, contamination and damaged removal features. Follow the pipe handling instructions and replace a protector that no longer fits securely. Specify storage exposure and cleaning requirements when reusable service is intended.
For this plastic design, agree the approved resin grade and geometry. Metal-plastic composite protectors need their own specification and should not be assumed equivalent to an HDPE or ABS part.
Tubing, casing and drill-pipe references such as NC, REG, BTC, STC and LTC require different connection profiles. Provide the full size and thread designation with the drawing; nominal pipe diameter alone is insufficient for selection.
