PTFE Backup Rings for O-Ring Extrusion Support

For a custom PTFE backup ring, define the section geometry and its position in the O-ring gland. Submit the ring and groove drawings together so that inner diameter, outer diameter, axial thickness and any contoured surface can be reviewed as one assembly.

Specify pressure direction, maximum differential pressure, operating temperature, fluid formulation and clearance under load. The backup ring supports the O-ring at the extrusion gap; application limits depend on the complete gland and selected material grade.

Specify solid uncut, scarf-cut single-turn or spiral multiturn construction. Include cut angle, overlap or profile features where applicable and the route used to install the ring without damaging the seal.

Material range:

Virgin PTFE is an unfilled material option. Review deformation and dimensional requirements for the intended service.

Filled PTFE options require the filler type, content and grade designation. Review material data and compatibility with the mating surface and process fluid.

For quotation, send the drawing number and revision, dimensions with tolerances, material grade, construction and quantity. Include an AS568 O-ring reference or metric O-ring dimensions where relevant; the support ring needs its own dimensional definition.

A custom section must fit the available groove space while supporting the primary seal adjacent to the extrusion gap. Check the combined seal-stack width and the intended O-ring squeeze before approving the profile.

When replacing a damaged ring, record deformation and the side on which the O-ring was nibbled. Confirm the original groove and pressure conditions rather than copying a worn sample without review.

Identify critical dimensions and inspection requirements on the drawing. For a contoured profile, include the section detail and its relationship to the O-ring; specify any cut or overlap features separately.

Use pressure direction to define support placement. Reversing-pressure glands may need support on both sides, subject to the specified groove geometry; an additional ring must not be assumed to fit an unchanged gland.

NBR and FKM rubber backup rings are separate material alternatives requiring compound and Shore A hardness information. They are not defined by the PTFE hardness reference.

For repeat custom orders, retain the approved profile, material and drawing revision. Confirm any proposed change in filler, construction or dimensions before substitution.
