A lot of people are not aware of the influences of the extra heat to the applications, overheat is the main factor for the device failure, especially for the high power laser diodes. So the unwanted heat has to be dissipated in time mandatorily, otherwise the laser diodes would be shortened the lifecycle, even be damaged totally. A appropriate laser diodes heat sink is necessary to remove the waste heat.

 

How to design a laser diodes heat sink?

Most of lasers have a maximum security temperature, when the laser is operating on the temperature which is higher than the maximum security temperature, the performance would be affected, and in a long term the life cycle will be reduced and finally be destroyed.

In a laser application, how do we measure the dissipated power? there is a simple method that we can just take the total input power minus the output power, the balance is the dissipated power and max power of extra heat. So we need a suitable heat sink which is capable of removing the heat generated by the laser diodes. different laser device has different power, also need different heat sink type, lower power device may just need a solid metal heat sink just like extruded heat sink, machined heat sink plate, etc. but for high power laser diodes, we may need to design a complex heat sink assembly with forced air or liquid cooling to meet the thermal requirements. Copper and aluminum are the main materials for heat sink building, usually we will make a choice based on the space, weight, performance.
